The Wicker Man: final cut
Robin Hardy / United Kingdom / 1973 / 94 min / English
The screening will be followed by a discussion about the film with film critic Marcel Štefančič Jr., moderated by Žiga Brdnik.
In the beautiful atmosphere of the Maribor Puppet Theatre’s Auditorium, we will be watching The Wicker Man (1973) as part of the event Letni kino Minoriti, annual open air cinema. This cult classic of British folk horror has been restored to 4K for its 50th anniversary, and as a final cut. The low-budget film tells the story of a sergeant, a devout Christian, who investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote Scottish island. There, he is plunged into a labyrinth of even greater puzzles and temptations by a mysterious neo-pagan community.
“Writer Anthony Schaffer and director Robin Hardy and a brilliant team of cinematographers, scenographers, costume designers, musicians and actors have made a film that is a mix of horror, detective story, ironic comedy, musical and allegory about the clash of two dogmas, one whose rigidity is immediately clear and the other whose full horror is only revealed at the end of the film. The Wicker Man is unlike any other film and is probably the only feature film in which we see a snail mating (and this to the accompaniment of a bucolic ballad and the recitation of Walt Whitman’s poems).”
