Der dritte Raum (“The Third Space”)
Institut Raum und Gestalt, Architektur, TU Graz
“If we stop looking at the landscape as the object of an industry, we suddenly discover (…) a quantity of undecided spaces, devoid of function, that are difficult to name.”
Gilles Clément calls these indeterminate places Third Landscape. They are spaces at the edge of forests, along roads and rivers, forgotten corners, useless, empty, nameless spaces, residues or empty spaces.
This lack of function and name contains the intention, the inspiration to be something.
Rem Koolhaas refers to these spaces as Junkspace. They are the remnants that humanity leaves behind on the planet, what remains.
We want to think together about these spaces, which are neither full nor empty, neither functionless nor useless. They represent possibilities, but not concrete visions of the future.
We will approach these topics through various texts from architectural theory, landscape planning and urban design.
